Before the advent of ROVs, underwater tasks were limited by the following:

  • Depths that divers could dive to - beyond 50 metres nitrogen narcosis is a concern

  • Times that divers could work in the water - usually between 1 and 2 hours

  • Jobs that divers could perform - additional expense of training for specific tasks

  • Equipment and tools that the diver could manage underwater at one time

  • Weather and environmental conditions prohibiting diving - sharks/ too dark

  • Quality of Imaging- particularly of inspection video being “shaky”

  • Type of information that could be collected

  • Expense of either hiring divers, or having diver(s) on your staff.
